Every seller on the Amazon marketplace knows the importance of the Buy Box. It can make the difference between watching orders pour in and refreshing your page every few hours, hoping that something comes through.

But wouldn’t it be great to know if you could get the Buy Box before you made an investment in your inventory?

One ASIN might look like a great deal, but if you are pushed out of the Buy Box, it might sit on your shelves for weeks. Another item might not immediately strike you as a quick seller, but if you could competitively corner the Buy Box, it would be a great money maker.

1. Is Amazon a Seller?

One of the most useful bits you can find in an eComSpy report is if Amazon.com, Inc. (“Amazon”) is selling that ASIN. If they are, you should temper your Buy Box expectations. It’s not impossible to get it, but you are most likely in a situation where you are picking up the scraps that the gorilla leaves behind. If you sell on the FBA platform and have a very healthy margin, you can still make a fair amount of sales, but you will not likely see a flood of traffic.

2. What’s the Lowest Price?

In your eComSpy report, you immediately see the lowest selling price for each ASIN. This gives you a pretty accurate idea of where the Buy Box is trending at and where you need to price your item to stay in the mix. Sometimes the lowest selling price isn’t showing in the Buy Box since it might be shared by many different vendors. However, you can expect the Buy Box price to be close to the lowest selling price. If you don’t think you can hit the lower range of prices considering your expected margins, the Buy Box may be out of reach.

3. Who Am I Up Against?

The last essential piece of information from your eComSpy report to help you win the Buy Box is data about the other sellers. One column will list the total number of sellers for each ASIN. If there are only 1-2 other sellers, your odds of claiming your share of the Buy Box go up dramatically. However, if there are a dozen or more, it will be harder to sneak in.

Also, Amazon continues to favor sellers who sell via the FBA platform. Therefore, you stand a better chance of winning the Buy Box if you are the only FBA seller up against 5 vendors from the Merchant Fulfilled Network, as opposed to competing with 10 other FBA sellers. In a situation like the latter, you will need to offer a much lower price to get a higher share of the Buy Box.
